This question is simple… OVAR is a territory blessed by Nature through scenarios carved by the estuary, the sea and the forest!
With an excellent geostrategic location, this territory offers fascinating and challenging water plans, namely in the Ria de Aveiro and Barrinha de Esmoriz.
In a quiet area, located between two main cities (Porto and Aveiro), Ovar has an extensive forest area and integrates a rich and distinct biodiversity, where the Buçaquinho Environmental Park is a reference.
In addition to being a coast with several beaches – Furadouro, S.Pedro Maceda, Cortegaça, Torrão Lameiro, Esmoriz – where Furadouro beach is a reference for surfing.
Ovar is a privileged destination for those looking for natural beauty, the pleasure of physical activity and outdoor sports, and the experiences that nautical offers, in an integrated and qualified way!
Culture is a differentiating and competitive factor in this territory, where museum spaces, events and agents genuinely welcome and live intensely.
There are 60 km of bike paths, 6 km of Walkways and many more footpaths that allow you to discover small ecosystems, native fauna and flora, and stunning landscapes.
Ovar has a quality and transversal program, of which the following stand out: the Ovar Carnival, the Lent Processions, the May do Azulejo, the FIMO – International Puppet Festival, the Festa/Sons da Lusofonia, or the Animar as Praias, in the summer .

Gastronomy
Are the sweets, the flavors and the colors that give the gastronomy of the Aveiro region unique characteristics, which remain in the memory and taste of those who taste it! And Ovar is no exception! As a territory marked by the tradition of fishing and agriculture, many of the typical dishes originated within these agricultural and fishing communities: fish stew, marinated eels, eel soups and stews, rojões à lavrador, cooper-style steak and sardines. .
It is, however, a reference and specialty product in the municipality, the Pão-de-Ló de Ovar. It has the shape of a bread and its dough is light and fluffy. On the upper part it has a very thin moist crust, with a slightly brownish color (the “ló”) surrounded by an edge of creamy dough in an egg-yellow tone, with a characteristic aroma. Traditionally marketed wrapped in “almaço” paper, it is one of the main business cards of traditional Portuguese confectionery.
During your stay you will also have the opportunity to enjoy traditional meals prepared by the Refúgio.

Passadiços / Barrinha de Esmoriz
Located between the municipalities of Espinho and Ovar, Barrinha de Esmoriz/ Lagoa de Paramos is a rare medium-sized coastal lagoon, unique of its kind along the northern coast of Portugal.
The requalification of Barrinha de Esmoriz gave rise to a beautiful walkway, with about 6 km, which takes you to discover the charms of this area.

Parque da Fonte de Estanislau
Just 15 min. walking distance from Refúgio, this will be your place of choice for a walk after a meal. The Estanislau Fountain Park was created in 1935 and recently refurbished. A place rich in natural landscapes.

Santa Maria da Feira Castle
The Castle of Santa Maria da Feira is one of the most notable Portuguese military monuments. The diversity of its defensive resources used between the 11th and 16th centuries makes it a unique piece of our military architecture.
It has always represented for the Fair, and for Portugal, a symbol of national identity. Throughout history, it has performed various tasks: it was a fort under Roman occupation, a bulwark against the Norman invasions, a military fort at the time of the Reconquest, the seat of a military region, the great political center that led to Portugal’s independence and housing for royal and noble families.

Porto city 20 min. of the Refuge
Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and the one that gave the country its name. Since 1996, its historic center has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. A city with historical monuments, century-old bridges, parks, and the magnificent Douro River.
Without the typical gastronomy of the region, namely the famous specialties of the region: from Francesinha, through Tripas à Moda do Porto and Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá.

Passadiços do Paiva
The Passadiços do Paiva are located on the left bank of the Paiva River, in the municipality of Arouca, district of Aveiro. There are 8 km that provide an “untouched” tour, surrounded by landscapes of unparalleled beauty, in an authentic natural sanctuary, next to whitewater descents, quartz crystals and endangered species in Europe. The route extends between the river beaches of Areinho and Espiunca, with Praia do Vau between the two. A journey through biology, geology and archeology that will surely stay in the heart, soul and mind of any nature lover.

Parque Ambiental do Buçaquinho
Parque do Buçaquinho occupies an extensive protected forest area, of great environmental value and with a rich biodiversity in terms of fauna and flora. It is an attractive space, suitable for leisure and outdoor activities, integrated in an area of pine forest and six ponds (it also includes a cafeteria, children’s playground, garden of aromatic plants, tower and bird observation post, multimedia space and Environmental Education Center), with a program of dynamic activities throughout the year and for various audiences.

Estrada Florestal de Maceda
Comprising about 1850 hectares, it is one of the largest European areas of Pinus Pinaster in full Forestry Regime. In addition to its importance in ecological terms, it is an inviting space for outdoor activities, walking or cycling, taking advantage of the county’s network of bike paths and its connection to the beaches.

Trip in a Van - Dona Bimba
Enjoy a ride from our Refuge to S. Jacinto beach at the wheel of a Van!
A trip along the Ria lasting about two hours, with a short stop to enjoy the natural landscapes.

Centro Náutico da Ria de Ovar
Founded in 2004, it is a non-profit association, whose objectives are focused on the identification, preservation and dissemination of the nautical heritage of Ovar in a museological perspective. Its mission is to safeguard and restore recreational boats representing the nautical heritage.
Canoeing and Stand Up Paddle (SUP) are some activities that you can practice in Ria de Ovar.

Bowlikart de Ovar
This is a fun space in the city of Ovar with Bowling, Karting, Bar Lounge, Snooker, Table football, Amusement machines, among much more!

Sports linked to the Sea have been increasingly sought after on our beaches. Whether it’s Surfing, Bodyboarding, Stand Up Paddle (SUP) or any other… if you’re a fan of any of these sports, you’re sure to love it!

Aveiro City - The Venice of Portugal
Considered the “Portuguese Venice”, Aveiro has a privileged location with rivers, canals (rias) and boats, which facilitates the exploration of salt pans, fishing and maritime trade.
Aveiro has great historical, port and gastronomic importance, highlighting the city’s historic center, full of houses from the Art Nouveau period.
A feature of Aveiro, was the Moliceiro boat, a vessel intended for the collection and transport of the moliço, which grows on the bed of the Ria de Aveiro, currently these boats making guided tours for tourists.
Ovos moles or tripas de Aveiro are also some typical sweets of this city that you cannot remain indifferent to!

Museums
Casa dos Campos, a typical Vareira house, inhabited by the writer Júlio Dinis in 1863, was considered a Property of Public Interest in 1984.
The opening of the Júlio Dinis Museum – Uma Casa Ovarense in 1996 aimed to value the writer’s passage through Ovar and keep alive, in everyone’s memory, the legacy of a bygone era. In 2012, the Municipality of Ovar inaugurated the rehabilitation and expansion works of the property.

Historic churches
Considered a set of public interest in 2013, the Church of Cortegaça was built between 1910 and 1918. The façade, which is imposing due to its height, is accompanied by two bell towers and is entirely covered with tiles. The present classification also includes the vaults of the Old Cemetery.
